3.20.1Definition & When to Avoid
A carousel cycles through multiple pieces of content in the same space. Auto-advancing carousels for primary content are broadly discouraged — studies and industry consensus consistently show low engagement with anything past the first slide.
3.20.2Common Mistakes
- Auto-advancing before a user has had time to read the current slide.
- Placing genuinely important content (a primary call-to-action) on a slide most visitors never see.
- No pause-on-hover or accessible controls to stop rotation.
3.20.3Best Practices
- If used at all, pause auto-advance on hover/focus and provide clear manual controls.
- Never place a page's single most important message on a non-first slide.
Alternatives to Consider FirstA static hero (3.5) with the single best message, or a grid layout showing multiple items simultaneously instead of hiding them behind rotation.
