Hero Imagery & Background Video
The most performance-sensitive visual real estate on a page, precisely because it's the first thing that loads.

4.9.1Definition
Hero imagery and background video are the large visual elements anchoring a page's top section (3.5), setting tone and reinforcing the value proposition before any scrolling occurs. Because they load first and are large by nature, they disproportionately affect perceived page speed.
4.9.2Common Mistakes
- Unoptimized, oversized hero images or autoplay video that dominate initial page-load time, directly harming the crucial first impression they're meant to strengthen.
- Autoplay video with sound, which is broadly considered intrusive and is blocked by default in most browsers regardless.
- No text contrast consideration against a busy background image, making the hero's headline hard to read.
4.9.3Best Practices
- Aggressively compress and correctly size hero media — this is the highest-leverage single optimization on most marketing pages.
- Mute autoplay video by default and keep it short/looping rather than long-form.
- Use a scrim/overlay or text shadow to guarantee headline legibility against variable background imagery.
Real-World ExampleMany high-performing SaaS landing pages replace full autoplay video heroes with a short, muted, looped clip or a static image plus a play button — trading some visual richness for a meaningfully faster, more reliable first paint.
